We now have a social work service at our centre that is available to clients who also receive legal aid and the service is free, confidential and independent, and provides full-time legal advice by qualified lawyers who provide advice, information and, if necessary, advocacy and ongoing support (by appointment only). It also has an experienced and accredited financial advisor who assists clients in the event of a credit crisis and acts on their behalf (by appointment only). It offers information and referral services on topics such as family and personal matters, social affairs and welfare, health, self-help associations and groups, and local services. Please note: Lawyers do outreach services in Nerang, Palm Beach and Studio Village, but all appointments, etc. are managed by the Southport office. Since opening in 1984, our team of fully qualified lawyers have provided free services to the entire Gold Coast region. Our priority is to support the most vulnerable and disadvantaged residents in a variety of jurisdictions, including family law, domestic violence, consumer issues, minor civil claims, motor vehicle accidents, neighborhood disputes, and minor criminal matters. The Women`s Rights Unit is headed by women for women. Support is provided by lawyers and social workers during the day and several evenings a week.
The unit is interested in all areas of law affecting women, but is very interested in family law and domestic violence issues. The unit is actively involved in community education and legislative reform campaigns aimed at improving the treatment of women through the legal system. WLS provides free legal aid to Queensland women suffering from domestic violence, complex family law and sexual assault WLS does not provide legal aid to men. They do not deal with criminal cases. WLS is a Queensland-wide service, with face-to-face appointments limited to the Brisbane area. The administration and reception cannot provide legal advice. The Gold Coast Community Legal Centre can provide advice in various general areas of law and the Women`s Legal Service Queensland (WLS) provides free legal and social assistance in cases of domestic violence, complex family law and sexual assault to women and people who live in Queensland and identify as women.
